butler county fair
My dad loves the fair! He still tells the story of his 4-H pig Mable winning the purple ribbon and having her piglets at the fair. When they moved into town my grandparents lived just a few blocks from the fairgrounds so we would go there in the summer as well. The boys participated in the frog portion of the frog and turtle races this year.

You could bring your own animal or chose one that was provided, so the boys just adopted one from the tank. Shockingly, Joseph named it "Brownie".
The rules were simple, you place the frog on the starting pad, touch it to get it hopping and then measure the distance of the first three hops. You could use any form of motivation but touch after getting it started.
Brownie was not much of a competitor, Leo almost squashed him trying to get the frog to jump, but he survived and is living out his remaining time in a creek bed somewhere.

totus tuus
I have great memories of my time teaching the program in Kansas and Colorado, so I was extra excited for Joseph and Sam to participate this year. The grand finale of the summer catechetical program is a water fight and making of an ice cream sundae on the head of a teacher. I also have vivid memories of my hair turning pink with strawberry syrup streaks!
